Prostate Surgery – Knowing What to Expect Provides Peace of Mind
Knowing what to expect before and after robotic prostatectomy surgery will help you best prepare for this procedure. The first thing you should expect is to have good outcomes. Dr. Rutila has demonstrated superior results for cancer control, urinary continence and the sexual function after prostate surgery.
Recuperation and recovery after a prostatectomy is different for every patient. Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind:
- Nearly all of our patients leave the hospital the day after the procedure.
- Most patients are able to have their catheter removed within a week after surgery.
- Avoid strenuous physical activities for the first couple of days to a week. However, several short walks each day can help with your recovery.
- Lighter meals are best initially. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids even if you do not have an appetite.
- Dr. Rutila uses waterproof bandages so that patients can shower when they get home. These bandages can also be removed 2-3 days after leaving the hospital.
