Sports Medicine and Athletic Training
Share

McLaren-Flint has athletic training contracts with six high school athletic departments in Genesee County, they are Davison High School, Fenton High School, Flushing High School, Goodrich High School, Grand Blanc High School, and Kearsley High School. Each school has a certified athletic trainer (ATC) who is assigned to their schools sports teams to provide sports medicine care and coverage. Please note that the words sports medicine and athletic training are used interchangeably.

A certified athletic trainer is a highly skilled and educated health care professional who specializes in athletics and treating active persons. McLaren's ATC's have at least a bachelor's of science degree in athletic training and are also certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification. In January 2011 all practicing athletic trainers must also be licensed through the State of Michigan.

McLaren's athletic trainers cover practice and game competitions for their assigned school. They are responsible for preparing athletes to participate in their sport, and preventing and treating athletic injuries, administering emergent care, and facilitating referrals to other health care professionals. The athletic trainer is considered to be part of the schools athletic programs in which collaboration and team work exist between the coaches, athletic directors, and school administrators.

McLaren's athletic trainers are accountable to the school district athletes, parents, coaches, school administrators, and the Medical Center. Each high school athletic trainer is a liaison between the school's community and McLaren-Flint for athletic care. By having an athletic trainer present at practices and games, each school is providing a resource that can provide timely care during emergent situations within the arena of athletics.
