As a registered nurse, Jodie Eickhoff realized the health benefits of undergoing a surgery with only one incision versus four. But as a twenty-nine year old fitness conscious woman, she admits the idea of having no visible scar on her belly was the motivating factor for choosing single-port surgery, a relatively new technique for select abdominal procedures.
Severe abdominal pains landed her in McLaren's Emergency Department, where she learned that she needed her gallbladder removed. Once her pain was treated, Eickhoff opted to wait a little while before having her procedure.
"I happened across an article about Dr. Kia performing a new technique called single-port surgery," said Eickhoff. "The timing was perfect. If I could have the same procedure with only one incision versus four as used in the standard laparoscopic technique, why wouldn't I choose one?"
Eickhoff returned to work four days after surgery.
"When I awoke after surgery, the nurse assured me I did have surgery," recalls Eickhoff. "All I had was a little SteriStrip (bandage) on my belly button. I didn't experience much discomfort in my belly following the surgery. The surgery and recovery was better than I expected."
