One of the hospital's ongoing quality initiatives is the Surgical Care Improvement Project or SCIP. This is a national quality partnership of organizations dedicated to improving surgical care by reducing surgical complications. Different surgeries have specific areas of focus. For orthopedic patients, our goal is to follow these three steps:
- Give patients a precautionary antibiotic within one hour prior to their incision. Although this is a low dosage amount, it helps fight off infection immediately at the surgical site.
- Use only the specified antibiotics that have been found to work best for orthopedic procedures. Exceptions are only made if a patient is allergic to a specified antibiotic.

Give the prescribed additional precautionary doses of antibiotics within 24 hours of the completion of the surgery.
