Frequently Asked Questions
How much weight will I lose after surgery?
Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery: Weight loss varies between individuals and has as much to do with adherence to your meal plan as it does with surgery. With the Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery, weight loss is greatest in the first 3-6 months after surgery. A person can expect to lose 20% of the excess body weight at 3 months. This is an average of 7-20 pounds per month. Weight loss will usually reach a maximum between 18 and 24 months post-surgery. The average weight loss at five years ranges from 48-74% of your excess body weight after Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery.
LAP-BAND System:
Weight loss results vary from patient to patient, and the amount of weight you lose depends on several things. The band needs to be in the right position, and you need to be committed to you new lifestyle and eating habits. A weight loss of 2 to 3 pounds a week in the first year after the operation is possible, but one pound a week is more likely. Twelve to eighteen months after the operation, weekly weight loss is usually less.
What are the health benefits?
After surgery, patients frequently report an improvement in other health problems they’ve experienced. Many patients who previously had high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiac problems, joint problems, respiratory problems, and infertility report major improvement. Results vary by patient. In addition to weight loss, many patients enjoy increased energy and greater interest in physical activity.
What are the risks involved in weight loss surgery?
Every surgical procedure has certain risks. At McLaren-Flint the risks of weight loss surgery are no greater than any other type of major stomach surgery. While they are infrequent, some risks include pneunomia, gastric leaks, infection, pulmonary embolism and in rare cases, death. Our surgeons will review with you in greater detail the surgical risks involved with Bariatric surgery.
How long is the recovery time?
Recovery time varies with patients and the type of surgery performed. Open Roux-en-Y surgeries will usually require 6 weeks of recovery and after a laparoscopic surgery, most patients feel less pain and generally recover faster and are able to resume normal activities sooner |
Will I need to change my diet?
Yes. Your Bariatric surgery is a "tool" that assists you with weight loss. Our Registered Dietitians meet with you before your surgery, during your hospital stay and after surgery to advise you on proper nutrition. After surgery, your diet will progress gradually from a clear liquid diet to regular foods over a 1-2 month period. You will eventually be able to enjoy many of the same foods you are able to enjoy today. Certain foods like sweets may need to be avoided.
Does my insurance cover this surgery?
Most insurance companies provided benefits for weight loss surgery. We encourage you to contact your insurance provider to determine if they cover surgery and what criteria they have established for surgery coverage. We will work with you and your insurance carrier to assure that your surgery is pre-approved.
