McLaren Cardiac Rehabiliation Teaches A New Lifestyle…
McLaren’s Cardiac Education and Rehabilitation program promotes healthy heart living. In cooperation with a patient’s primary care physician or cardiologist, a team of health care specialists assist the patient in completing a four-phase educational and progressive activity program.
The team of specialists includes: dietitians, social workers, coronary care nurses, physicians, and cardiac rehabilitation specialists.
Phase 1 – available to patients admitted to McLaren-Flint.
The first phase of McLaren’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program emphasizes inpatient education with a gradual progression of activity. Patients receive individual instruction on a variety of cardiac topics and they can view video programs. A mild exercise program helps patients to return home quickly and confidently.
Phase 2 – available on an outpatient basis.
Insurance companies generally cover the following diagnoses: Coronary Artery Bypass, Heart Attacks, Angioplasty or Stent, Stable Angina, Heart Transplants or Valve Replacement.
This 18 to 36 session outpatient telemetry monitored exercise program is located at McLaren-Flint on 1 North. It emphasizes modifying a patient’s lifestyle to reduce cardiac health risks. Patients generally begin this program about 2-4 weeks after leaving the hospital. A physician referral is required. In this phase, the patient will attend three, one-hour exercise sessions each week for 18-36 sessions.
The exercise program during this phase includes a warm-up exercise, use of equipment such as a treadmill, stationary bicycle, recumbent steppers, rowing machines, recumbent bicycles and arm ergometers. Exercise also includes a cool-down period. Patients wear cardiac monitors during the exercise session and are supervised by McLaren’s team of cardiac rehab specialists. Education classes on risk factor modification, nutrition, stress management, and medications are available and required for phase 2 patients.
Phase III – offered only at McLaren-Flint.
This phase is either private pay or covered by select insurance companies. This is a three day per week program which is not telemetry monitored. The patients receive three blood pressures per session.
Phase IV – Located at McLaren-Flint or at the Flushing Satellite on Elms Rd.
"Hearts in Motion" Maintenance Program (Phase 2 Graduates)
This is a private pay program. During this phase, patients become part of an exercise community focused on keeping their hearts strong. Blood pressures are checked one time per session. EKG’s are checked once a month and telemetry sessions occur every three months.
