McLaren Provides Comprehensive, Advanced Cardiac Care
• McLaren Regional Medical Center meets the U.S. national rate of survival for heart attack and is one of only two hospitals in the state to exceed the national rate of survival for heart failure.*
• McLaren Regional Medical Center exceeds the target range of 91-95% in the core measures set forth by Blue Cross Blue Shield in treating acute myocardial infarction (AMI), more commonly referred to as a heart attack. McLaren provides prompt, comprehensive care for heart attack patients arriving through Emergency.
BCBS core measures on the treatment of patients arriving in the Emergency Department with signs of a heart attack include:
• Aspirin is administered upon arrival
• Beta blockers are administered upon arrival.
• Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), or balloon angioplasty, is administered within 90 minutes of arrival.
• Aspirin and beta blockers are prescribed to heart attack patients at discharge.
• McLaren Regional Medical Center has within its medical staff eleven board certified cardiologists, ten board-certified interventional cardiologists, three board-certified thoracic surgeons, and a cardiovascular disease specialist.
• In 2008, McLaren Regional Medical Center installed high definition endoscopes and monitors in their operating rooms. Additional equipment to provide superior visibility was added to the cardiac operating suite.
• McLaren is the only facility in the Greater Flint area to utilize the benefits of robotic-assisted surgical procedures. Fernando Jara, M.D., thoracic surgeon utilizes the enhanced visibility and greater precision of the da Vinci surgical robot in surgery to perform minimally invasive procedures.
• Abdul Alawwa, M.D. an electrophysiologist at McLaren treats patients with an irregular heartbeat condition, called SVT. Using an endoscopic technique called radio frequency ablation; the irregular heart rhythm is corrected by cauterizing the small portions of abnormal tissue in the heart. Currently, this procedure is only performed at McLaren.
• The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at McLaren offers comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation therapy consists of four levels of care, beginning with inpatient education and ambulation and gradually leading to an independent exercise regimen with periodic health checks. • The McLaren Research Institute coordinates several original, national and international studies conducted by physicians on staff at McLaren. This allows qualifying patients at McLaren access to promising therapies otherwise not available in the area.
